Inherited Health Problems

From the beginning I have been interested in the role that our inheritance plays in our health tendencies.  It is obvious that inheritance plays a massive role - and this has been repeatedly validated by scientific study.

It is also obvious that eating the same foods and being exposed to the same general environment, beliefs, and lifestyle create consistent health tendencies as well.  This always leads to the infamous nature vs. nurture debate.  How much is physically inherited and how much is attributable to growing up in the same environment and living a similar lifestyle with similar dietary patterns and similar forms of intellectual stimulation?

It is unknowable and highly individual of course.  But I have found it interesting that in RBTI, those who have eaten similar diets for many years - such as married couples, usually have strikingly similar chemistry.  Likewise, children of those parents often have very similar chemistry as well.

My first real life example of this came when visiting with a man who had some respiratory problems.  Challen told him after looking at his body chemistry, that he had emphysema and that he may have something more serious developing.  The man later informed us that his father had died of lung cancer and that both he and his father seemed to share similar health tendencies.

A far more interesting example came just a couple of nights ago here in Boulder.  Pippa and I tested eight people including a husband and wife that had strikingly similar chemistry.  The following day we tested the daughter who had almost identical chemistry to her parents, her father in particular who she has always been told she looks like the most.

I bring up this example just to show, if anything, that body chemistry is not random and meaningless.  These patterns mean something, and by changing these patterns, one can almost assuredly change the direction their health is headed in - no matter how many years or even generations a person has spent entrenched in one imbalanced pattern.

Here are 10 sets of actual "numbers."  See if you can select the family of three I talked about above, identifying the mother, father, and daughter.  Post your guesses in the comments.  I will eventually get in there and post the correct answers.  If you take a few moments to think about it you'll easily come up with the right answers.

1)  4.2   7.4/7.6   28c   4M   8+/12
2)  5.0   6.2/6.0   18c   4M   7+/7
3)  2.1   7.6/6.2   23c   4M   7/7
4)  4.8   5.5/6.0   28c   4M   7-/9+
5)  2.5   6.6/7.2   12c   4M   7+/7
6)  2.0   7.2/6.2   18c   4M   7+/7
7)  1.8   5.8/7.0   6c     4M   2/5
8)  0.6   6.8/7.0   4c     4M   2/5
9)  4.5   5.8/6.1   29c   4M   7-/9
10) 1.1  7.4/6.2   5c     4M   6/5

Hey Matt, are Challen's Teaching Materials any good as far as being able to figure out RBTI for oneself? I plan to get all of the testing materials, but sub out the ph reagents for a ph metter (because I'm red/green deficient), but I want to be able to understand the mechanics and make a diet and supplement plan on my own based on the numbers. Any suggestions?

  3. Whee! This game is easy!!!

I will send you a vial of my urine as a prize!

  4. I have found the same. I have tested my sister and my mother and they had the exact same brix and ph. I actually thought that maybe this testing is a fluke (still not sure)- but then I tested my husband and he was totally different.

  5. rats, i was hoping for a refractometer. although a vial of matt stone urine *could* come in handy in a battle against, say, aajonus vonderplanitz. or even johnny lawrence.

really though, it seems like i pick up on more and more symptoms of hypoglycemia if i'm paying attention. a couple of rashes on my arms get pink and itchy. frequent, urgent urination. sensitivity to cold. waking at night to go pee. and now, just this morning, i noticed when i do have the strong urge to urinate, my tinnitus is more noticeable. it's always there, but i don't always consciously notice it.

for my next feat, i would like to be able to raise my sugars without overshooting. a bite of fruit does nothing, as far as i can tell. and while a couple of honey buns and some fruit juice knocks out the hypo symptoms, it also sets me up for a crash later on.

is there any circumstance, do you think, where teeth getting looser, or even aching, could be good? mine are kind of crookedy (even after 3 years of braces in my teens - they all migrated back to where they were in the first place.) i console myself with the fact that maybe they are on the move again, this time to a more aesthetically pleasing, evenly spaced position. (i know i could be fooling myself, so if you're a negative nelly commenter, please don't bother to point that out.)

  7. Bryan-

The easiest way to get the answer is to first categorize the people into high and low sugar categories.

Next categorize them into acid and alkaline urine pH (the top number in the first number written as a fraction).

Of the 4 higher sugar people, 3 are acid and one is alkaline (The alkaline person was me on my first test).

Of the 6 lower sugar people, 1 is below 6.4 and 5 are above 6.4 - but none of the other numbers really match up. 3, 5, and 10 look very similar, but then you see their salt readings are totally different. Or at least not nearly as close as the 3 high sugar/acid folk.

From there you can see that two of those sets of numbers have basically identical salt readings and urea readings. That is the father-daughter pair.

Of that pair, the daughter, not surprisingly, has higher sugar and lower pH, making her farther from the A range and thus more imbalanced than her father (the younger the generation, generally the greater the imbalance as humans are collectively getting unhealthier).

    Anyways, it's interesting.

As for learning RBTI, the most important way to learn is to follow it - learning how to tweak your own chemistry and what various imbalances mean. Challen's materials are helpful but need an overhaul.

  8. Good guess Aaron. 7 and 8 look very similar, but the difference in pH between 5.8 and 6.8 is huge, and very significant. 6.8 puts #8 into the B range. #7 is in the D range. Big difference. And although they are both low sugar, there is a big gap between .6 and 1.8.

  10. Intersting post, but could you include a word search or coloring book page for people like me the next time you offer a quiz?

  11. dear dcx,

none of these symptoms are new. i've had roller coaster moodiness, frequent urination, tinnitus, itching and cold sensitivity for many years. i just never knew, until now, what all these things were tied to. now, when i drink some juice or eat enough fruit, these little disturbances disappear. this may be confirmation bias - i don't care - i'll take it.

  12. Hi Matt,

I can't guess but it's interesting to see how much can be read from these numbers.

Also, your link of no no foods didn't post on facebook. Would be great if you posted.

  13. On the RBTI yahoo group, they are advocates of eating:

    Whole Raw Milk
    Butter
    Coconut Oil
    Potatoes (red, gold and sweet)

    As long as:

    1- You can digest it
2- It is in alignment with your chemistry
3- It is part of a varied diet

There are many experienced RBTIers on that forum with lots of years of experience. Thomas Giannou who Matt talked about in his High Brix Gardening post, has been ecommended to me as one of the best out there. He is on that forum and says he thoroughly enjoys high brix potatoes out of his garden as part of a varied diet and feels very
    well eating this way.
They have also said on that group, that Carey Reams said to not consume homogenized dairy products.
So that leaves skim milk if you drink regular store bought milk. But for Raw Milkers and others that
are not homogenized, as long as you can digest it, and it works for your chemistry, it is fine to drink it with the fat. Same with coconut oil and butter, you may have to pass on those for a while, but with some healing you should be able to consume them, as part of a varied diet.
It is a great forum with loads of information and
    experience, for those interested.

  14. Thanks Lisa,
That's really interesting info. It really helps the whole picture (beyond but also including RBTI) come together a lot better. It was kind of what I was suspecting myself. I believe the guidelines Matt put together in his PDF say something about digestibility when it comes to fats. Some give the impression that butter and coconut oil are complete no-no foods. I have a hard time correlating that.

    At Matt,
    I got it wrong. :(
Intriguing info though. I'll have to reread your comment and look over the numbers again when I get another free moment here.

  15. Matty,

How goes the RBTI eBook you mentioned? Looking forward to checking it out. Also, it would be double plus good of to you include recipes and meal ideas in there. You could just pilfer stuff from your cookbook of course- that'd be fine. I'm just stumped about what the heck to eat with the various restrictions and don't eat stuff multiple days in a row guidelines. Totally counter to how I roll intuitively.

  16. Cool--hands-on problem sets with explanations!

I'm bicultural and was raised by parents not eating that similarly to what they were raised on. Changed it even more since, plus I've had celiac since young age. Also self-proclaimed vegetarian since age 7, whereas my brother (who is so different from me, we don't even look remotely alike) insisted on meat.

So, I might be an interesting subject for _dissimilarities_ from parents. I've lived most of my adult life in a very different place from them too. And yet--my mom has adrenal fatigue tendencies and my dad has a blown-out thyroid--check and check.

  18. Sonja-

That's a great guess. The pH's are pretty distant in those - and the pH matters more than the similarities in the ureas. 3 and 6 are alkaline over acid as well, while number 5 is alkaline/alkaline. The correct answer - 2,4, and 9 are all acid/acid.

    Tom-

That's a fantastic idea. I will try to include a Waldo for you to find or something in the next quiz.

    Rob A.-

I will probably include a short cookbook on the side.

    Lisa-

Butter and coconut oil are fine in small quantities for most people. They do have the potential to overload the system of those in a weakened condition. I do notice that skim milk is much better tolerated than whole milk.

  20. Curiosity got the best of me and I just tested my PH. Saliva: 7.0, urine 8.0. Does it change with time of day? Any idea on what this means, Matt? Is that extremely alkaline? I'm surprised, I would have thought I was more acidic. I've been drinking high-alkaline water lately, so maybe that's why.

I won't be able to afford a testing kit for a long time but may try to keep an eye on PH and keeping blood sugar level and see if that helps anything.

  22. To those who tick the "Anonymous" option and then sign a name at the end of your comments, if you tick the "Name/URL" option, a box will appear for you to type in a name, url, or anything you want. Just FYI.

If blogger would show that box before ticking that option, it would eliminate that confusion.

  23. Matt, where do the + and - attachments to your urea numbers come from? I have read Challen's material, but haven't come across this distinction. Does it have to do with darkness of the sample, or extra rings? Do tell...
    Thanks.

  24. I just tested it again and both urine and saliva are now 6.5 (down from the 7.0 saliva and 8.0 urine 2 hours ago). This is so weird. I drank some water with lemon and ate some snacks, so maybe that fixed it. I have to say physically I feel better than I did 2 hours ago (when I was feeling more spacey). But aren't the PH numbers supposed to be more stable than this?

  26. Wow, if I could ever convince my family that RBTI isn't woo-woo, I bet we could make for a real science experiment. I am the eleventh of twelve siblings (yes, all of us are from the same parents). My mom just hit 65 and is running around like a 40 year old-- I can only wonder what her mineral delpletion is though. None of us have any major health issues (the oldest is near 40 while the youngest almost 18). Some of my siblings (including the youngest) have perfect teeth, others of us don't. But most interstingly, my nieces and nephews, (particularly my nephews), seem to be affected by a neurological disorder where they are very smart cognitively, but have trouble controlling muscle movements, including speech (called apraxia). I mean I could go on about us (I mean there is a dozen) as it fascinates me. But I wanted to ask you Matt, how does RBTI affect people with apraxia, autism, or ADHD?

  27. Amy-

My pH's move around quite a bit as well. Some have more stable pH's than others.

What I have generally noticed is that when my sugar levels are low, I tend to be more alkaline - and when my sugar levels are perfect my pH's tend to be perfect, and when my sugar is high I tend to be overly acidic.

But that's only after monitoring for a few days to see what my general patterns are. The fluctuations are referred to by Challen as "the wobble."

    Debra-

    The darkness of the color

    Betty-

When ureas are high you drink more water, take dolomite, and of course stop eating pork and shellfish.

    Caroline-

You would have to ask ol' Challen on that one. I've heard him talk about success stories but I didn't have a chance to interview anyone specifically.
