Pee Freelea and Couchrider

Please bear with my sick sense of humor, but Pip and I did a short spoof of the 80-10-10 raw vegans Durianrider and Freelea of 30bananasaday.com.

What's wild is that the information in this video is pretty accurate.  That is Pip's actual age, she has lost a lot of weight since starting to work with Challen 6 months ago, she does no structured exercise and hasn't for a decade.  I asked her yesterday how many days out of 7 in a week she ate ice cream as she was achieving the body she currently has (which is much leaner than she was when we were living in Hawaii together and she was eating semi-raw Paleo).  Her answer... 7.

I too am getting lean quickly on Challen's program, with no exercise other than walking a mile or so around town every day to and from his office.  Funny thing is - I gained a lot of weight eating to appetite of junky foods in April.  But with subtle changes in meal schedule, meal timing, and meal frequency - here I am losing weight eating to appetite of the same type of foods (ice cream, pizza, etc.), and with even less exercise.  And hey, my pet allergies of 15 years have subsided and the nasty rash I had break out all over my lower body after eating tons of bananas in the month of June disappeared immediately after arriving in Wheeling.

Anyway, that's enough for the previews.  On to the feature presentation...

  4. You do realize that you're gonna have to shed a lot more info on this now that you've lost weight and she has lost weight with not a lot of changes made. I'm sure you're just baiting us to stay tuned for the rest of the week huh.

  6. If a person can lose weight with this, then I wanna get on it! Does Challan do long distance work? :)

Unlike many here, I am weight stable on thyroid and happy with my current high carb diet. My insulin and glucose levels are also excellent.

However, I need to lose weight, 26 lbs in an ideal world and 16 to be tolerable. Also, as you know my basal temps are woeful - what does Challan think about body temp?

    :)

  7. Hi matt,
Would rbti help with digestive problems? I imagine I could afford a test kit if I didn't spend my money on health foods which have done nothing for me. I've been suffering from this since childhood and thought it may be gluten but going gluten free hasn't cured it although cutting out dairy has helped with many of my other problems. My blood panels and thyroid are consistently spot on. My dad is a longtime junkfood vegetarian and has terrible digestive issues, I seem to have inherited his health problems but would like to spare myself in the long run.

    Solid impression btw

Can't wait to learn more about it.

  9. I, too, have lost weight eating according to the basic general guidelines and drinking just two or three cups of the "lemon water" a day. I gained 10+ pounds during Ray May (I was so pissed that I stopped weighing myself). In about six weeks, I've lost nearly eight of those and am only three pounds from where I started from. I am exercising, but only about an hour a day and mostly outside doing fun things that I like. I really enjoy this way of eating and wow, it is really inexpensive!

I can't afford to consult with Challen or buy any testing materials, but I'm not in ill health, just want to lose a little weight. So, here's my typical day:
morning--big bowl of oatmeal with a couple tablespoons of maple syrup, OJ, coffee
    midmorning--lemon water w/ lemonade
lunch -- Trader Joe's beef hot dog (fried in olive oil), cheap corn tortilla chips (fried in corn oil!), glass of OJ
midafternoon -- lemon water w/ lemonade
dinner -- salad (w/homemade dressing), grilled or sauteed vegetables (maybe a slice of bread, but not usually)
evening -- perhaps a lemon water if I'm thirsty

So far, really enjoyable and stomach bloat is noticeably gone. Great potty times, too! (wink, wink) Oh, I'm taking a colloidal mineral (w/ calcium, magnesium, selenium, and zinc) and then also a liver clearing supplement. My nails and hair are growing like crazy. I'm also not hungry btwn meals at all, so I'm not snacking.

  12. I also wanted to add that I'm over 40, work full-time and a side job, have kids, and usually have a hard time losing weight (but can quickly gain). For me to say that this feels effortless, that's saying something.

  13. If you stick with the program and are overweight, you will loose weight. However if you are underweight you will gain weight.

  15. hahahaha that was good.

So there is hope for pollen allergies? We just figured out the pollen allergies that we have, but haven't started any meds yet. Have you seen any results with allergies and no meds on RBTI?

  16. sorry yes that was a bit vague. I bloat constantly, it goes down after 2 hours but its painful. My BMs are normal-ish but it seems like a lot of things are coming out intact like i'm not digesting properly. I have trouble sleeping and focusing because eating a meal will trigger stomach pain, intestinal spasms, bloating and sometimes heartburn. It doesnt seem that bad but it happens three times a day and brings on anxiety attacks that make it impossible for me to have a normal life. Eating dairy makes my tongue swell up and makes me dizzy enough to be down for the count and gives me acne wich is not a problem if I cut it out.
I'm also very sensitive to additives like carrageenan and sulfites and small amounts of caffeine will give me palpitations and spontaneous bruising.
I was using quite a bit of sea salt in my cooking but i've cut that out and switched to distilled water a couple of days ago.

  17. Haha funny stuff Matt!! I can't imagine eating 30bananas per day as one makes me gag. Matt about the lemon juice water, how many lemons per quart.I am wary of drinking an acidic drink like that day in and out.The reason is due to me getting teeth pains when I started one apple cider vinger shot per day on the advice of a 77 yr old friend.I mean in a matter of 2 days I had teeth pain and I never had them my whole life.My friend laughs at me and says it does not erode the enamel but he does have a pretty set of false teeth.;)

But I believe that ACV is magical in balancing out body PH just from observing my friend.See I can be out drinking and pounding down the beers and he is right there next to me.Whats crazy is the next day I would be in bar at 12noon and with a raging hangover and in would walk my friend, who I nicknamed mighty Joe young for a reason. He would grab a beer and start shooting pool like the 15 beers he drank the night before dont phase him.He swears its the ACV.Funny thing I ran into him today and he was going to take a lesson to apply for his CDL license....at 77 yrs old. :) I do not tell him its ridiculous and just let him live his dreams.

He says he eats alot of canned veggies w just a little meat and that the secret to his health and youthful energy is 1 to 3 ACV shots per day.

What are your thoughts on ACV?You think it could be balancing the PH and that is what causes the benefits people claim?I have been doing my Optimal diet with alot of greens for my 60gms carbs per day and also one teaspoon of baking soda and I am losing weight finally and take some great dumpsLOL.The healthy feeling of shitting out what you ate the day before and not the food lingering in the gut for days feeling I usually get.

  18. More, why no mention of calcium?I was trying to figure why Lemons are recommended and I started looking into maybe it has alkalizing minerals as it is alkalizing to the body though acidic in nature.Well I come to find that lemons contain calcium and that blew my mind. Then I find that many veggies contain calcium and again that was an eye opener and shot down the theory that maybe its the calcium in the lemons. But just now I went looking for some info on Reams and stumbled on this.

    CALCIUMS
Spelling error? Not at all. Carey Reams identified almost a quarter of a million different
calcium compounds. He was able to divide those into seven basic groups and consciously
decided to use the mis-spelled "calciums" as a means to draw attention to the wide variety.
RBTI consultants are quick to point out that whereas an alkalizing calcium such as calcium
hydroxide can push the urinary pH up, an acidifying calcium such as calcium lactate can just
as easily drive the pH down. On the other hand, many calciums, such as gluconate or
citrate, are considered neutral in that they provide the needed mineral without affecting
    the pH.
The seasoned RBTI consultant understands that "driving" pH values is not the name of the
game. This "driving" almost reduces RBTI to the level of drugs, which are designed to force
the body into one state or another. Conversely, RBTI is about feeding the body those foods
that can build it to the highest state of health.
The heart of the problem is that modern foods are so calcium-deficient that the mineral
reserve of the body falls so low that it cannot easily maintain homeostatis. This was a key
reason for Reams' strong stand that we "should eat the widest possible diet". His
agricultural knowledge allowed him to see that a wider diet would bring a more balanced
array of "calciums" into us. The other part of that suggestion was that he knew a wider
diet would bring more of the 83 other needed minerals into our system. Although the
preferred method of obtaining a sufficient mineral assay is to eat higher Brix foods, most
people find they need to take calcium supplements.
It is impossible to overstate the need for calcium, but as the RBTI consultant knows, it is
important to make sure the calcium being used does not force the body into an adverse pH
situation. Medically-oriented physiology textbooks detail the many ways that calcium is
used by the body to neutralize and dispose of harmful acidic products or byproducts. The
pH portion of the RBTI equation allows one to estimate the mineral reserve (mostly calcium)

And hears a quick read of Dr.Reams being interviewed about hypoglycemia.I wanna start the lemon fast but I know and have know for yrs my liver is shot and that my severe hypo is the reason.I can drink alcohol and if I over do it...like 2 days in a row I will not sleep for 3 days.If I can fix that and get back to my usual drinking HAHA joking. Here it is anyway for people lost on what this man has brought tothe health table.

  22. Matt,

it's amazing how you always feel awesome on any new diet, but when you try the next one you write about how it is helping with health problems you developed on the last one. I'm thinking your weight loss may have something to do with you eating a lot less calories? You mentioned before that you are eating a lot less. I was thinking before (before the banana / gelato times) that you had found a pretty great diet, but were just eating too much of it, and thus getting fat. Could there be truth to this?

Recently I'm following the RBTI schedule for eating, which is actually what has been recommended (at least in my country) for ages: breakfast like a king, lunch like a nobleman and dinner like a peasant. I got to say I'm liking it.

I've also been wondering about this: Whenever people tested my urine, they thought I was diabetic, because there was sugar in it. Now, I always thought I was hypoglycemic, but then I also have had a burning sensation when urinating whenever I felt "hypoglycemic," so now I'm thinking that actually my problem is high blood sugar (occurs only when I eat too much, esp. sugars) and that my kidneys are compensating for that. Any thoughts on this rbti-wise?

  23. My question from the Facebook page: "No meat or sweets after 2:00 p.m." Standard or Daylight Saving Time? Spring forward, Fall back. 2:00 p.m. becomes 1:00 p.m., or vice versa, after the changes. Hmmm, how closely does the body pay attention to 2:00 p.m., and which one?

    Thanks.

  24. @ Lanie, Matt and/or whoever happens to know: I would like to second the question about the lemon water/lemonade; what amount of lemon juice are you putting in per litre of water? I read somewhere that you should add enough of whatever sweetener you use to make it specifically to taste; i.e. so it tastes good to you at the time. Is that what RBTI teaches also?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ah yes, my breakfast is vegetarian, mostly carbs... maybe not really like a king's breakfast after all, but kind of largish.

    ReplyDelete
  26. To all who are asking about the lemonade.
It is specific to your program. It depends on your chemistry. It's not a great idea to start doing the lemonade until you have been tested as it depends on whether your sugar is high or low. The symptoms for both can be the same but the treatment is very different.

    Hans.
It is breakfast like a queen, lunch like a king and supper like a pauper. I couldn't tell you which you were unless I tested you. Symptoms are similar for both. We could talk and I might be able to guess from what you tell me but why guess when you can know =)

  28. Matt and Pippa, great video! But I still have a hard time understanding the seeming contradictions between some of the foods you're eating and the foods recommended, for and against,in Challen's book, "The Only Health Guide You Will Ever Need". Does he give explanations for having you eat ice cream, pot pies, etc. ?

    ReplyDelete
  29. @Fleaflea

    Thanks for sharing.

My best guess would be that both your urine pH and Saliva pH are out of wack. One being low, one being high, causing one part of your intestines to move fast and not pick up the nutrients and process the foods, while the other part keeps the foods in too long, making it rot inside you. But I don't like guessing.

If I was in your situation I would buy at least some pH strips ranging from something like 5.5 to 8, but that would still give only a partial answer.

Oh, but your question was not that, it was just if RBTI could help you. Definetely!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Lemon water / lemonade / distilled water is very important in RBTI. It depends on your numbers if it is better to take only distilled water or a combination of distilled water and lemon water or distilled water or lemon water with a sweetener

lemon water consists of 10% fresh lemon juice and 90% distilled water.
the link below gives some basic info on lemon water.

  31. quote from Dr. Reams mentioned in Choose Life or Death from Carey A. Reams with Cliff Dudley:
"Weight is very easy to control. Anyone who will keep the carbohydrate sugar level between I and 2 of the RBTI test, eat a great variety of foods, especially vegetables, and cut down on meats (way down on all kind of meats, and do away with the eating of unclean meats), I have never seen one person whose weight wouldn't drop to its genetic level. (By unclean meat I am speaking of those referred to in Leviticus I I : pork and all its products, including ham, bacon, sausage, pork chops, spare ribs, pork roast, salt bacon, cracklings-any part of a hog is unclean to man. All the shell fish, including shrimp, tuna, mackerel, catfish, oysters, lobster, clams, scallops. Any fish without fins and scales is unclean for human consumption. Then there is also the rabbit, guinea pig, crow, buzzard , bald eagle, muskrat, and snakes.) The unclean meats digest in a period of an average of three hours, causing more energy to be released than a body can consume.
The clean meats digest in an average of 18 hours, giving the person a chance to use the energy as it is made available".

  33. Lynn-

The eating schedule is mostly where any weight loss comes on this program. It has a similar effect to Martin Berkhan's version of Intermittent fasting, but I suspect it is superior due to eating your food early and eating light right before you go to sleep. You probably don't need any one-on-one consultation with anyone to eat a carby breakfast, a big lunch with meats and sweets, and a very light dinner with just vegetables, salad, veggie soups, etc. (no meats or sweets after 2pm - a little starch is okay for some).

    Wolfy-

Your idea, as a suspected hypoglycemic, to do the lemon water fast is probably a terrible one. Fasting is very dangerous. I have yet to see Challen put someone on a fast. It can ruin a hypoglycemic.

Reams thought lemon juice was the world's only truly anionic substance, which is part of what made it special.

As for apple cider vinegar, this is why RBTI is awesome... You probably have an overly acidic pH. When you take in vinegar it makes you feel horrible. Your saliva turns more acidic than normal and starts to wear down tooth enamel.

Your friend probably tends towards an overly-alkaline pH (does he tend towards constipation and have a big nose and big lips haha?). Thus, the vinegar throws his chemistry in the right direction. This doesn't make him healthier long-term, but it does balance things out and keep symptoms at bay in the short-term.

  34. Kitchen Recovery-

I have found seasonal allergies to be about the simplest thing to overcome. That was the first health improvement I had when improving the quality of my diet. I used to get completely ruined by seasonal allergies, but they went away permanently when I started eating lots of nutritious foods (mostly fresh juices, raw fruits and veggies at the time).

But I think the primary reason my pet allergies/asthma have disappeared is the eating schedule. My asthma used to only bother me after:

    a) Eating a big meal with sweets specifically
    b) Late at night

This is when the sugars tend to peak. And the higher you send your sugar levels, typically the lower they will fall - creating greater peaks and valleys. That's why you don't eat more sugar or eat heavy when your sugars are already naturally peaking. And it makes a huge difference. Immediately.

  35. Doug N. -

Challen's books are not a good representation of what he eats or believes that people should eat. He contradicts himself again and again. For example, in the book you mention, he says that you can heat foods in the microwave but not cook them in a microwave. 2 pages later, his first recipe calls for cooking something in the microwave on high for 6 minutes. I think he has a few beliefs that make success much more difficult to achieve, and that have negative long-term consequences. I don't see myself advocating margarine or soy bacon for example. His belief that organic food is inferior is based on a complete misunderstanding of what organic farming is (he thinks you can't use inorganic fertilizers like soft-rock phosphate or limestone in organic farming).

    Lemon juice-

3 ounces fresh lemon juice, 29 ounces distilled water, 1-2 T of sweetener depending on your individual chemistry. So not very sweet at all.

    Hans -

Weight is a result of the balance between metabolism and appetite, if eating to appetite. Because of the extended fasting period and the meal structure, appetite is reduced. I have not noticed any decrease in metabolism. Eating 2,500, if below appetite, will have a much more adverse effect on metabolism than eating to appetite at 2,500. In other words, the sensation of hunger has a tendency to slow down metabolism in and of itself. It's a lot like Berkhan's program in that sense, but with meal structure flip-flopped to favor light eating at night vs. fasting in the morning (a practice that never jived with me, or made me feel very good the few times I dabbled around with it).

Many people with high sugar have low sugar swings as well. The best way to identify it from what I've seen is how frequently you urinate and how urgent the need to urinate is.

Frequent urination is a strong indicator of hypoglycemia. Infrequent urination is a sign of the opposite.

  36. Matt,
In terms of the eating regimen, is lunch the only meal of the day at which you eat meat? Breakfast is mostly starch? I like the carby breakfast followed by a big lunch idea. I've mostly been eating breakfast like a king followed by a long lull with maybe some snacks and then another large meal for dinner. I like the idea of eating light in the evening.

    A few questions:
Are all protein sources, such as eggs and cheese, avoided in the evenings?
Are carbs kept lower in the evening meal, or does it not matter? Is the point mostly nutrient dense light foods?
What about alcohol? When and where is it allowed in the RBTI protocol?

Glad to hear the program does not negatively affect metabolism.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hey there, I wondered if RBTI does anything to help candida.
    Thanks!

  38. Meighan, I love your question. That's the way my mind works, too.

Fun video. Looking good at 40 isn't a big deal -- genetics, relative stress, etc., play a big role. My dad was doing mission work in Brazil in his 60s, and the people there were amazed he was that age -- he looked so much younger than their typical 45-year-old. This was out in the country where the living was tough, of course. He's eaten pork and chocolate all of his life, but always a big breakfast and lunch with a light supper, and rarely snacks. Mostly, though, he's a calm person living a middle class USA life who happens to have inherited a tendency to look young. Counts for a lot.

And he's one reason that I realize that the plural of "anecdote" isn't "data".

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yeah, I think I get it now - it's a guideline for what to eat when. One's body has to adjust sleep schedules when the clocks are changed, so I'm sure it can adjust eating times as well.

  42. Jaqueline, I think I have that problem you mentioned to fleaflea. I do have pH strips already. So I took it this morning and saliva was about 6.5 and urine 7. I'm not sure what I can do with that info though, if anything.

Thank you for sharing. Good that you already have pH strips. That is a good start!

When someone has perfect health that person would have an urine pH of 6.4 and a saliva pH of 6.4.
Your pH's are 6.5 and 7. That is very close to perfect health based on the pH's. However I don't know your brix number, conductivity number, cell debrix number and your UREA's. So I cannot give you a thorough advise. Therefore I need all 7 numbers. Sorry.

I'm very intrigued by this three meals a day and no snacks thing: I think that my blood sugar is just starting to get to the point that I could handle that. Especially curious, Matt, about your suggestion that the sensation of hunger tends to drop metabolism: I think I can definitely relate to that in my life.

My problem is that times I've tried to eat a big lunch that'll last me till dinner-time, I tend to feel overfull and sick. I like the idea of eating and then being 'done' for several hours, but had concluded that it wasn't worth that feeling.

Any suggestions on what I could do (macro-proportion wise, for example) so as not to have that effect?

  51. from experience i agree with the hunger dropping metabolism. i easily got very lean, often going days eating just 1k calories having loads of energy and not being hungry. but when i was hungry i ate and ate everything until i was totally satisfied. so i never went against my hunger and never had a drop in metabolism or mood or regain of weight.

also i think a lot of people could benefit from a b-complex supp. i have no problem with any or any amount of food but i noticed an increase in warmth and energy, and can go longer between meals, taking a small amount of this food based one, just half one per day or one every few days or whatever
